ECP helps launch career at Simon Cowell's SYCO

EAST COAST PICTURES is celebrating, as one of its team has been scooped up to work at SIMON COWELL’S company SYCO Entertainment.

Andy Harris (24) has been Camera Operator and Editor working with Julia and the ECP team on a variety of productions for three years, and will be going to London in a fulltime role for SYCO, makers of shows such as The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent.

Julia Thompson, Managing Director of East Coast Pictures says,
‘Having enjoyed a successful career in television myself, I wanted East Coast Pictures to be a launch pad into the mainstream television and media industry for local graduates.  I’m absolutely thrilled for Andy and for the career that lies ahead.’

Julia set up East Coast Pictures in 2007 having returned home to Cleethorpes after a successful career in the TV industry.  She began her own career as a Runner at ITV before climbing through the ranks at ITV and BBC, working on programmes such as Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway and This Morning, to become Director of Entertainment for Sony Pictures Television.  East Coast Pictures has teams in Grimsby, York and Sheffield and over 20 freelancers from Camera Operators and Editors to Animation, Motion Graphics and Social Media reporters.

Julia says,
‘The key to our success has been bringing together those with industry experience in particular Producers and Directors who have worked for companies such as ITV and BBC, with local, young talent.’

Over the last few years, East Coast Pictures has produced videos for around 100 local companies and organizations, as well as programmes for the new local TV channels working with presenters such as Julie Peasgood, Andy Crane and Chef, Rachel Green.

Andy Harris began his career completing work experience at East Coast Pictures while studying for a degree in TV and Film Production at The Grimsby Institute. Andy then gained a position as a Camera Trainee on BBC series, The Paradise and Kay Mellor’s, The Syndicate before returning home.

Andy says,
‘ Working on the big shows was a real eye opener, working long hours as part of a big team. It was really tough but Julia encouraged me to stick at it and I’m really glad I did. ’

When Andy returned home in Summer 2013 he rejoined the company as Camera Operator and Editor, working on a wide variety of locally made productions.

Andy says,
‘SYCO were impressed with the range of experience I’ve had at East Coast Pictures, from filming interviews on location to multi-camera studio shoots, filming with children, business people, dancers and performers, even HRH Duchess of Cambridge, its been amazing.’

Julia says,
‘The television industry today demands a high level of multi-skills, not just camera operating but also research and development.  I’ve never held back creating productions that have pushed the team, from children’s shows such as The Tinkers, promoting Recycling for schools across NELincs and Tom & the Trawler, which launches later this year at Grimsby’s Fishing Heritage Centre.

The company’s biggest success to date, has been The Local Kitchen presented by Chef, Rachel Green.  The first series to attract commercial sponsorship on the new local TV channels and the new series, filmed at Lincoln Castle launches on NottsTV in October and online.

Andy says,
Filming and editing The Local Kitchen was a big challenge, filming in windy fields or noisy factories it gave me fantastic experience. I’m a big fan of shows like Great British Bake Off and Masterchef, and The Local Kitchen allowed me to film exactly the same sorts of sequences as you see on these big shows.’

Andy says,
‘One of the highlights of the last year was filming this year’s Northern Lincolnshire Business Awards for Hull and Humber Chamber of Commerce, sponsorsed by GSMG.  We had over 30 companies to film and edit, as well as our ‘Postcards from Cleethorpes’ video, which had over 1000 views in its first few days.  It was the most exciting evening, seeing the films on the huge screen at the auditorium and a great night to share with the many business people who have supported ECP over the last year.’

Andy’s success follows that of East Coast Pictures photographer Dan Clarke who now works with celebrity photographer, Rankin.  Dan began his career as production photographer, taking press and publicity photographs for the company, going onto fashion shoots and live dance performances.  He also took part onscreen for series created by East Coast Pictures for Cleethorpes based salon, Cutting Club, which has had over 75,000 views on YouTube.   Dan is currently in Los Angeles with the photographer Rankin and is based in London.

Andy says,
‘Being able to work with Julia and the ECP team has been an incredible experience.  It doesn’t matter whether it’s a drama or cookery show, filming with greenscreen, animated seagulls or business people you never know what you’re going to be filming next. I can’t wait now to get started with Simon Cowell and his team at SYCO.  Who knows, I may come up with the next Britain’s Got Talent!’
